What happens after I surrender my hamster?Once one of our volunteers has collected the hamster, it will be placed in a foster home. All foster homes adhere to our hamster care standards, such as minimum cage size (100 x 50 x 50), correct wheel size and more. Every hamster that comes into our care will stay with us for at least a 2 week health watch period. In this time, the hamster will be given a full health check, weigh-in and be left to settle for a few days. We will check their health every day and general tameness level during week two. Health checks continue at least weekly until they leave our care. Every female hamster that comes into our care will stay with us for at least their pregnancy watch period - 16 days Syrian, 21 days Dwarf, 25 days Chinese, 28 days Roborovski. We would never allow a hamster to go to their forever home if there is any risk whatsoever that they might be pregnant. Our volunteers regularly complete our 'Hamster Info Sheets' to let us know all about the hamsters in their care, what they like/need and any health concerns. Using these, we monitor weight gain/loss and note down any information we think adopters need to know!

What happens if a hamster is not adopted?Hamsters will remain with their foster volunteer until they are adopted or pass away.

How deep / how much bedding does a hamster need?HHUk recommends at least 8 inches/20cm minimum deep safe bedding is imperative for a hamster to display their natural burrowing behaviours. You can read more on the research regarding bedding depth here.
-
Are hamsters solitary? All hamsters are solitary in captivity. You can read more on this topic here.

How big should my hamster's cage be - and why?HHUK recommended size is 5,000cm², which is the equivalent to 100x50cm unbroken floor space. We also advise 50cm as the minimum height of a hamster's enclosure in order to provide the recommended bedding depth across the majority of the enclosure. You can find more information and linked studies here.
